[edit] Introduction
The universe of Pastel, where the story takes place, is essentially a huge "tunnel," filled with air and rectilinear "continents" rushing through the air. Like Tryslmaistan, the setting of Reitz's previous webcomic, Pastel has its own unique physical laws. The Pastellians believe that it was created by Godan specifically for human use. The Pastellian society is essentially a theocracy, with the Godanist religion permeating nearly all aspects of life. The "prime imperative" of this religion is the growth of the human race to the degree that it fills the cosmos - and any other universes as well, as those universes are also believed to exist for the sole purpose of being conquered by humanity. (As a side effect, homophobia runs rampant in Pastellian culture, because homosexuals cannot normally reproduce.) Also present is the understanding that Godan brought their ancestors to Pastel when their old universe was destroyed, a thousand years ago (give or take a few centuries). The degree to which these beliefs are true is later explored.
Dr. Ranse Aoi, one of the most respected scientists in Pastel, is forced to resign after his superior, Meiun Nakimono, disappears while on an expedition to another universe. He proceeds to do the "one thing a real man would do...Get stinkin' DRUNK!" While in this state, he carves a hole in the chest of a stylized sex toy resembling the Pastellian equivalent of an anime character, and inserts an alien object of immense power, retrieved during the final extraversal expedition and resembling a golden sphere the approximate size of a baseball, earlier dubbed an Omnipitor by Dr. Aoi. He found out that he had done this the next morning, along with its effects: the doll had been brought to life, and he had apparently told her she would be his daughter. Referring to her as "Heliotrope security level clearance only," her name thus became Heliotrope Security Aoi.
Heliotrope, due to the powers given to her by the Omnipitor, ends up tangled in many other situations, including the actions of Glinu Chartreuse, the cover-up of the circumstances surrounding Dr. Nakimono's disappearance, and the legacy of what actually happened all those centuries ago.
[edit] Characters
[edit] Ranse Aoi
Dr. Aoi is a competent professor in his own right, but he is best known as the assistant to Nakimono, the most famous scientist in history. His emotional growth is somewhat stunted, and he is somewhat maladjusted sexually (which is why he bought the doll that later became Heliotrope in the first place). He has blue hair, and is employed by Chatoyant Sciences Academy on Shushoku Continent, Pastel's most prestigious college.
[edit] Heliotrope Security Aoi
Created by incomprehensible alien technology, Heliotrope identifies Dr. Aoi as her Papa, much to his consternation. She learns extremely quickly and is enthusiastic and filled with wonder at existence, though if Aoi orders her to, she will agree to let him remove the Omnipitor from her body. Having experienced nonexistence and the wonders of existence, she highly values life, which later places her in conflict with Chartreuse. As she matures, her personality comes to be shaped by her awareness of her own immense power, and its implications.
