Pasta fagioli

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pasta e Fagioli, meaning "pasta and beans," is a traditional Italian peasant dish that is now a frequent menu item in the United States, and the hotels of Canada, even in restaurants that don't feature Italian cuisine. In southern Italian dialect, the name of this dish sounds like "pasta fazool."

It is made using cannellini beans and some type of small pasta. The base is generally olive oil, garlic, onion and spices, along with stewed tomatoes or tomato paste or even, in home recipes, the leftover sauce from Sunday gravy.

The consistency of the dish can vary, as some fall clearly in the soup category, while others are much thicker.
