Passos

Passos is a city and municipality in southeastern Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The estimated population in 2005 was 110,000 and the area of the municipality was 1,339.20 km2. The geographical position is Latitude: 20°43'01 and Longitude: 46°36'39. The elevation is 739 meters.
Considered the capital of the Southeast of Minas Gerais, it lies on the banks of the Grande River and is connected to Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, and the state capital of Belo Horizonte by MG 050.
Industry is the main economic activity of the municipality and is mainly centered in the production of sugar, yeast, milk byproducts and poultry. It has been expanding in other areas like heavy vehicle parts, cement, shoes and clothing.
There are five colleges offering courses in humanities, sciences, engineering, nursing, law, and computer science.
Passos has three hospitals, two general and one psychiatric. The Santa Casa de Misericórdia hospital, with approximately 80 doctors and 280 beds, has the only ER in the region.
