[edit] Life
Known as the "Singing Chef", Carpino was better known as "Chef Pasquale". He even once said :[1]
“If I sing when I cook, the food is going to be happy.”
Arriving from Calabria, Italy with eight dollars in 1958, Carpino started as a dishwasher in a restaurant which eventually paid off and he moved from there to become a chef and later a saucier. In his path was a job at the Waldorf Astoria in Toronto while learning opera in the Royal Conservatory of Music. Even though he loved to sing, he knew he couldn't make a living out of it and that is the reason behind his career being in cooking.[2] Afterwards, he fought his way to become a celebrity chef and a Toronto icon. He also owned a restaurant in north end Etobicoke.
In 1964, Carpino met his wife, Evelina Carpino, through music, she was a soprano singer. When he asked her brother if he knew of anybody who could have the soprano part in an upcoming concert. They had Beatrice in 1968 and Lisa in 1973, two daughters.[2]
His local Toronto show ran in the 1970s, and Pasquale's Kitchen Express was a daytime television program on the Discovery Channel from 1990 to 1992. His early shows continue on as re-runs on OMNI.2 in Toronto.
He died in Toronto after complications from surgery.
