Parksosaurus warreni Sternberg, 1937 |
Parksosaurus was a North American Late Cretaceous hypsilophodont dinosaur. The specimen discovered would have been in life 4 feet (1.2 meters) high, 7 feet (2.1 meters) long, and must have weighed 150 pounds (68 kilograms). It had a long neck and small head with a horny beak. Its forelimbs were short and strong. It ran on hind legs but may have grazed on all four legs.
Parksosaurus was originally called Thescelosaurus warreni, grouped with another ornithischian dinosaur (Thescelosaurus) with a similar overall build. However, key differences in the feet (shape and articulation of the claws, for example) prompted its reclassification in a separate genus as Parksosaurus warreni. It was named to honor paleontologist William Parks.
