Paris metropolitan area

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Paris metropolitan area (today covering an area similar to the Île-de-France région) is a statistical area encompassing the administrative city (commune) of Paris, the Paris urban area (unité urbaine) (its contiguous built-up area) and a commuter belt area (couronne périurbaine) surrounding these. Together these make the Paris aire urbaine statistical area, an area similar in concept and definition to many of the world's other metropolitan areas.

The INSEE (Institut National de la Statistique et des Études Économiques) determines the extent of the Paris metropolitan area from data indicating areas of habitation with populations having a high numbers of commuters to places of work within Paris' urban area. To date, the Paris aire urbaine is used only to gather census data, i.e. : age, sex, place of habitation, place of birth, education, trade, place of work, salary, habitants per household and size of habitation. In determination and method, the Paris aire urbaine is a statistical indicator of Paris' demographic and economic reach.
