The Third Set of Locks project is a plan to expand the Panama Canal’s capacity, approved by the panamanian people on a national referedum realized on October 22, 2006. This project was conceived after years of study by the Panama Canal Authority(ACP). It has an estimated cost of 5.25 billion USD and its composed of three integrated components:
- the construction of two lock facilities – one on the Atlantic side and another on the Pacific side – each with three chambers, each which include three water reutilization basins;
- the excavation of new access channels to the new locks and the widening of existing navigational channels; and,
- the deepening of the navigation channels and the elevation of Gatun Lake’s maximum operating level.
- That more than 12000 people died in the construction of the Panama Railroad?
- That Richard Halliburton (on the picture) swam the Panama Canal in 1928 paying only 36 cents for the transit?
- That the Balboa (Panamanian currency - ISO 4217 code PAB) has been tied to the U.S. dollar (which is legal tender in Panama) at an exchange rate of 1:1 since 1904?
- That after a constitutional amendment, passed in 1994, Panama permanently abolished the military?
- That on October 22, 2006 on a national referendum, a 5.25 billion USD project to expand the Panama Canal to accommodate bigger ships was approved?
