Pantelimon, Bucharest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pantelimon is a neighborhood located in the north-eastern part of Bucharest, Romania, in Sector 2. Outside Bucharest, there is an adjacent town named Pantelimon, administered separately.

The Pantelimon district is named after Saint Pantaleon (Pantelimon in Romanian), and hosts the Lia Manoliu Stadium, the largest football stadium in Romania. Pantelimon Avenue is the backbone of the district.

Similarly to the neighborhood of Ferentari, Pantelimon has a bad reputation and is widely believed to be a center of crime within the city.

One of the famous areas for crime and prostitution is Capătu' lui 14 (or Capu' lui 14, literally "the terminus of (tram) line 14"), which is situated in the east side of the neighborhood. Another area with a bad reputation is Socului, which is situated near the Chişinău street, in the center of the neighborhood.

Pantelimon is also famous in Romania because of the hip-hop band B.U.G. Mafia. As children, the members of the band lived on Pantelimon Alley, near Capătu' lui 14.

The neighborhood is also famous for Spitalul de recuperare a forţei de muncă (the Hospital for Workers' Recovery), which in the past served as a mental hospital under the name of Spitalul Mărcuţa. It is said that Mihai Eminescu was a patient of this hospital.
