Panathenaic Amphorae

These were the large ceramic vessels that contained the oil given as prizes in the Panathenaic Games. This olive oil came from the sacred trees of Athena, the amphorae which held it had the distinctive form of a narrow neck and feet and decorated with in a standard form using the black figure technique. They depicted Athena as goddess of war advancing between columns with the inscription "from the games at athens" and on the back was a representation of the event for which the vase was a prize.
