[edit] Green Line

Greetings, my friend, I hope you have been well. The reason I'm writing to you is because I just expanded the Green Line article (for the most part, translating bits of from the Hebrew Wiki one), and I'd appreciate any attention you could give the article before I move on to the next round. All the best, El_C 22:46, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Looking good, comrade! Thanks for your mildly-(un)sober yet most helpful edits! A new round should follow soon. More detail on my talk page. All the best, El_C 00:05, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Palestinian territories

I admire the stand you’ve taken against Ed Poor, et al, but I think moving the page to WB&GS would giving too much ground. I made a compromise in the past with Jayjg and Slim Virgin on a different article (which can be found last year’s discussion in Israeli-occupied territories, or my talk page), and came to regret it. The evidence compiled by Gregor Samsa, particularly the speech by President Bush, provides very strong support for concluding that PT is the majority term, accepted by the world political establishment. In fact it took an enormous struggle by the Palestinians to get to that point. It think it’s obvious why editors like Ed Poor and Sangil, who have difficulty acknowledging the existence of Palestinians in the first place, would like to rename the article WB&GS - they would like it to appear that these areas are up for grabs. If they are allowed to prevail on this, I don’t expect them to give any ground in return, in fact the page move would probably be a push to delete the article altogether, on the grounds that we already have articles on the geographic areas. [edit] Primo Levi

I prefer Lager myself, but I seem to remember I was reverted a few times on various articles, and so I stopped using it. Thanks for looking for the sources for the other page; it's much appreciated, and there's no rush. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 05:54, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] request re Jesus

Hi Palmiro, sorry my response is kinda old : ) I'm just returning from wikibreak. I think when I requested your assistance, I assumed from the subject area of your edits that you were likely Muslim or at least knowledgeable of Islam, but I do apologize for presuming. Meanwhile thank you for keeping me in your thoughts, all is well, I just needed a little break. : ) --MPerel ( talk | contrib) 04:13, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Talk pages

Palmiro, could you post about articles to the articles' talk pages? Many thanks, SlimVirgin (talk) 11:26, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm asking you to post to the article talk page, not my own talk page. Thank you. SlimVirgin (talk) 11:28, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hamas

Writing on that article is a rather frustrating task, and I am not really sure if it is worth the effort. Even though I have absolutely no sympathy for Hamas, it is a disgrace for Wikipedia to have an article which basically is conducting a case against its object rather than attempting to give a neutral, balanced and comprehensive coverage. Unfortunately it seems that some users have very strong feelings against Hamas, which make them determined to counteract any attempt to make this article NPOV...Please keep up the good work! Bertilvidet 13:30, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Khalid Bakdash, Syria & palpol

I have absolutely no clue. Sorry. I know little either of the SCP or Bakdash or Arab Communism in general. But thanks for asking, and if I run into anything on the subject, I'll certainly let you know. In the meantime, have an ice cream at my expense chez Bakdash in Souq Hamidiya. See, I may actually swing by Damascus again this summer, albeit briefly, so if you're interested we could have a chat IRL. And I could repay the ice cream.

On the Palestinian Political Violence deletion, seems I'm too late to vote. I agreed both with your and Koavf's reasoning, though. The article has a vicious POV slant (I would assume that the Zionist Pol Vio equivalent has that too, though I haven't read it), and it's crawling with errors. Best thing would've been to merge them into Isra-Pal political violence (or into specific articles, such as the 1936 uprising, the Intifada etc), since that's what it is or should be about. But the whole thing is so stupid it just sickens me: can you imagine a page on "Russian political violence", encompassing everything from the Czars and Anarchist movements, and the revolution(s), the Reds & Whites of the Civil War, Stalin, WW1 & 2, to Putin's Chechnya? What the f**k would be the point of that? But for Palestinians, the important part is obviously what ethnic group carries out the violence, not in what context it takes place. Blah. Arre 22:41, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, after some months in Damascus feeding off second-hand English crime novel trash from the stores around Saahat ash-Shams, the book department of the big Virgin store at Martyrs' Square in Beirut seemed like heaven. But was expensive as hell. Anyway, I might get back to you if I go, and if so, when I know. Arre 20:58, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Glad I'm not alone

Thanks Palmiro. I would've never expected such a result. Somehow I don't feel the RFA is such a big deal, otherwise I would do it earlier. I've had my share of disappointments with Hamas (the article) as well. I am not an expert in this explosive subject, but I think I've read something on their relation to Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and Hasan al-Banna, let me doublecheck my WP:RS. Cheers! ←Humus sapiens ну? 22:26, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RFA thank you

Dear Palmiro, I appreciate your vote and your kind words in my RFA. It has passed with an unexpected 114/2/2 and I feel honored by this show of confidence in me. Cheers! ←Humus sapiens ну? 02:11, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RfA

Thank you for voting for me at my RFA. I am thankful for your kind words and confidence in me. Even though it failed, constructive criticism was received. [edit] Irate new user

Hi, As you've an interest in Irish republicanism, I'd like your help or advice on how best to deal with user User:Fluffy999. He's contributed some great, detailed stuff on German espionage in Ireland during WWII. The problem is that he tends to overreact to any edits I make (see User talk:Fluffy999 and Talk:S-Plan).--Damac 09:28, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edward Said

I have expanded the section on Orientalism, attempting to give a fair portrayal of Said's arguments. However, the criticism section far outweighs that on 'supporters and influence', reflecting my own knowledge in the field of History and Oriental Studies.Sikandarji 15:25, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Appeal to Palmiro

I appreciate your commitment to neutrality and to the policies of Wikipedia. Therefore, I would invite you to start applying it to all the Syrian articles, before getting involved in the Lebanese documents.

I would like to see your neutral contributions to articles such as Hafez Al-Assad, the Baathist Party, the massacres of Hama, the Muslim Brotherhood, etc.

But it seems that you cannot quit the habit of interfering in Lebanese internal affairs, and ignoring the sad realities of Syrian politics.

You are expected to show a neutral position on all the aforementioned articles, and I'll be more than ready to contribute positively afterwards to other articles.

Regards, Fares S 18:52, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lebanon

I can only repeat after you that "something very strange has happened in Syrian presence in Lebanon". I have no clue what to do. I feel that you are giving me credit for someone else's edits, so I'll have to pass it around. Cheers :) ←Humus sapiens ну? 07:48, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Disruption

Hey Palmiro, do you think we should report Tamman and Fares for Disruption, or should we continue to attempt to work with them. The fact that they continue to insert the same passages while refusing to listen to our pleads kinda leads me to believe that neither one of them will be easily swayed.- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 12:07, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

I think that I am the one who ought to report your constant disruption of my work. I've been working consistently on improving the article by including reliable references. You're only finding time to delete whatever I am contributing.
Could you please adopt a positive attitude, and start undertaking serious research, instead of deleting the work of others !! Thanks, TammamS 14:10, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Ah, cinnte! Is amaideach mé... gabh mo leithscéal. I'm still much a Béarlóirí (but learning!), sadly. Well, I've liked the name for ages, just loved the sound of it (I know that sounds strange, but then I like the sound of Dweezil as well, so go figure). Believe it or not, it was the name of a friend of mine's dog when he was a wee lad. His father had named it and was... well... a bit on the eccentric side, so that's the story. [edit] Talk:Hamas

Hi! I tried to put the intro to work on the talk page, maybe you'll want to leave some comments if you're available. Thanks, Tazmaniacs 11:11, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Hello! I've tried to organize the talk page, since we have permanent disagreements and we are obviously confronted to systemic bias, as you said, our solution is probably only to keep permanently the "completely disputed" tags as long as we don't agree with opinions presented as facts, and then recense all these points nicely in the talk page, so that new users can understand what the debate is about & take part in it (in the current state of the talk page, new users run away - I have a tendency of doing that in some others Wikipedia talk pages...) Best, Tazmaniacs 14:51, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] breakfast

I used to work in Dearborn, MI and a couple of Syrians brought that in for breakfast all the time. One of them let me have one of his sandwiches one morning and got me hooked. I have no idea if it was traditional or not... Basically they would break up the Shankleesh onto a piece of pita, place cucumbers sliced legthwise (the curly arabic variety) on top, some sliced fresh mint leaves, drizzle olive oil on it, then roll it up. It's because of them that I now go to a Lebanese market on the East side of Dearborn every couple of weeks to get my fix. I could live on Shankleesh sandwiches, Lamb Ghallabah, and Kibbee.--Isotope23 14:55, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hamas

Thanks for dropping the note on my page. I'm sure I could work with you to produce something reasonable in the article; however, when User:Tazmaniacs and User:Bertilvidet started removing citations simply because there were "too many", I lost any faith in their ability to edit this page in a neutral or reasonable way. I'm not sure where to proceed from here; what do you think? Jayjg (talk) 16:56, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Napolitano

GhePeU 14:42, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hamas acronym

I agree that Hamas being an acronym for Fire or ardor seems kinda far fetched, but it seemed kind of strange that you placed your comment asking ofr a source right after the provided reference- [1], did you not see it?- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 12:34, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Lebanon

Actually I'm quite aware of all of the confusing alliances of Lebanese Political factions, I was even thinking of writing something about Michael Anoun allying himself against other christian anti-syrian factions. What I really meant is that most of the individual factions draw their support from one of the three religious groupings, but there as you know there are multiple groups from each religion and they often don't agree with each other and make pragmatic alliances with other factions outside their religion. I feel kinda angry at myself for writing an oversimplification which I knew not to be accurate, but I think I was thinking about it in a different way.- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 20:03, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] kibbe nayyeh

Yeah, I love kibbe nayyeh. I only get to eat it occasionally though because it's not really the sort of thing you want to order in a restaurant. I know quite a few Lebanese people though and some of them have mothers/grandmothers who make a great kibbe nayyeh. They know I love it so the always send a bit over my way with some fresh baked pita. It's a treat.

Ghallaba is sort of like a stir-fry... I'm almost positive it is a Lebanese dish. Basically it is vegetables and meat (I'm fond of Lamb but I've seen it with Chicken, Shrimp, or Swordfish) in a garlic sauce, served with rice. Good stuff. Where I live there is a big Lebanese population with smaller Syrian, Palestinian, Yemeni, & Iraqi groups. Consequently most (if not all) of the arabic restaurants are Lebanese owned and tend towards Lebanese style cooking.--Isotope23 13:03, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
I've never had araq... have to try that sometime.

[edit] Maale Adummim

Why did you remove the "town" category?? Whatever one's political views, a place with 32,000 people is clearly a "town". You can label it a "settlement town", if you will. Look up the difinition of a "settlement" or "town" in the Oxford Engish Dictionary. Eliyyahu 14:44, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Fine. Actually, all Israeli governments have postulated that Maale Adummim will remain within Israel under any final agreement, but that's beside the point. With your permission, I'll just change the description to "urban settlement" - I believe this formulation is not controversial. Cheers, Eliyyahu 17:42, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ahoy

Hi there - all this talk of Kibbe Nayeh on your page is making my mouth water even though I've never had it (it's not common in Palestine). I have relatives who went to AUB (back in the old days) who miss it, though. Anyway: The National Initiative may have senior people involved in it who were affiliated with the PPP, but to say that the PNI itself is affiliated is unsubstantiated. Mustafa is not very well liked by his former colleagues in the PPP anyway, and remember that the major founders of the PNI included Haidar Abdel-Shafi and Edward Said, hardly PPP people (as far as I know at least). So no, it would be incorrect to state the the PPP and PNI are affiliated as fact. As for the settlement articles, there appear to be many such articles around WP that I'm not aware of. I'm not too concerned about them, but I appreciate your editing that makes sure that the internationally recognized label for them is the standard WP definition. If you have any trouble, let me know, as I can think of some compromises. Still haven't opened the Zu'mut... Ramallite (talk) 21:59, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Ah, yes, well, I cannot say I disagree. Well, I´m reading Beyond Chutzpah at the moment, and the title seems very, very apt. Actually, I thought of just adding a few articles, including a summary of a few books (that certain people will never bother with reading...so therefore I think I will be allowed to make a resyme in peace ;-D), including the "Chutzpah" book. (And if they read those books; perhaps their views would be moderated somewhat..?) Anyway: I hope you will at least take time to "vote" at Deir Yassin? Regards, Huldra 14:14, 13 July 2006 (UTC) (PS: but the Ben Dunkelman at least became "uncencored"..for as long as it lasts.)
PS: I know of more than one contributor who has quit WP in disgust...and started contributing to Palestinian causes full-time instead.. Actually; WP seem to be a great recruiter to Palestinian activism ;-)... I´m sure "Battle for Deir Yassin" will get a few more of us to leave and start contributing directly to Palestinian activism instead. I know for myself that I have been extremely radicalized here.... I wonder if certain POV warriers have any idea at all of what they are causing....

[edit] Al Fateh

Hi! Hope everything's awright! I've listed Al Fateh at afd, unwilling to make any propaganda for Hamas' medias... As the comment above show, it is certainly strange to find supposed enemies of Hamas making propaganda of it, so much that I have to keep suspicions under control... A radicalization certainly is what lots here seems to look for, but I still have hopes to find these articles more balanced in the future... Tazmaniacs 15:10, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] First into Damascus

Hi Palmiro. Re Damascus - Modern History: Thought I'd try and have a chat about alternate words for this part of the article rather than keep reverting each others work. Whilst only a minor part of this article, and of the history of Damascus in general, the "controversy" of who was first into Damsacus in WWI is something quite important from an historical point of view and especially to Australians. I have read widely on this topic as I am sure you have. I propose that we re-word this part (in the coming days - I am quite busy at work at the momet) to show that there has been and still is some difference of opinion as to who was first into Damascus. I would suggest we mention things like the reasons why Lawrence (of Arabia) initially claimed the forces of the "Arab Revolt" were first into Damascus ie. to refute French claim to Syria. We could mention that it is claimed that individual Arab soldiers may have infiltrated on the evening of 30 Sep along with the claim that some Australian Soldiers entered on the evening of 30 Sep (both since discounted by most scholars). I am at work now so can't put too much detail here and now. Suggest we work on some words collaboratively if you agree? Krait 03:52, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] James Larkin

Hi Palmiro, thanks for the note. I rated the James Larkin article as part of an effort to expand the WikiProject Organized Labour assessment project. I gave it the B-class rating simply because it has not passed through the Good article candidates process. I'm sure it is possible to rate over the GA-class (to A-class), but I've limited myself from that as I've been working through a great number of articles and have not spent detailed time on each one.

I'm afraid I don't have any advice for improvement - frankly I'd be willing to place it on the GA page. Beyond that, I'm not opposed to seeing the rating changed, I'll leave that decision up to you. Cheers.--Bookandcoffee 00:06, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Just an idea - if you're interested in a review of Larkin, maybe think about the GA process. Not so much that the rating matters, but it would mean that someone from the project will take a look and give you an outside view of the article.
I know you said you're not too excited about Wikipedia anymore, but I thought I'd just toss that out there for you to think about. Cheers. Chris --Bookandcoffee 15:46, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I've put an extremely POV article on AFD

Please give your opinion on Policide. It's written in such an extremely POV way (it's written from the perspective that Arabs want to destroy Israel) that, i.m.o., it should be deleted. It's like an article on the atomic bomb that starts with the sentence " An atomic bomb is a powerful weapon that the Arabs want to use to wipe Israel off the map" . :) Count Iblis 13:45, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your involvement in tis article. I agree with merging the two articles. I'm not really very interested in this topic, though. The POV reason why the article was created in the first place was bothering me. There were two possible solutions. [edit] Artificial State

Hey Palmiro how have you been? I saw that you edited artificial state and I was wondering if you had any problems with me removing all of the examples from the article. I figured that with the possible exception of Austria-hungary, the list was just going to be a source of potential conflict. What do you think?- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 06:39, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Now that I think about it your completely correct. I doubt that either common Britons or Normans really cared about being part of a unified France. I suppose sometimes that Nationalism plays a part in Nation-building like in the unification of Germany, but even then it was just convenient for leaders like Bismark who really just wanted a stronger Prussia. Anyways, do you think we could include something about that in the article?- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 19:13, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
To be honest I think I have to admit that you know quite a bit more about the subject than I do. I'll just follow your lead on the afd.- Moshe Constantine Hassan Al-Silverburg | Talk 01:13, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Artificial state

Time to go I think. I couldn't make it into a proper article anyways, and I put in a good effort. I also let the article sit for almost a year in a bad state and no one really was able to fix it either. --Deodar 20:49, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

It is a horribly ill defined term. That doesn't mean you can't make a Wikipedia article for it, but its sort of a crap shoot. I don't feel strongly either way. Do realize that I created that article very early on and I basically made up most of the statements from my own personal observations of Iraq's politics. And that the best reference I found to support the article was a blog entry. Heh. Vote keep if you want, but recreation from scratch and original reputable sources also wouldn't hurt. --Deodar 02:04, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] State of Palestine

I did not add any new material. The sentence you are probably talking about was added by someone else, I just added the "fact" tag to it. You also reverted my reorganization of the article without any explanation. I have reverted but I am going to add back in some of what you wanted kept in, to a lower section. The "mistake" here is that this article about a fictional entity is written (and cited elsewhere) as if it were real. 6SJ7 01:35, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Hang on; you may have a point about at least one paragraph that I didn't notice had been changed. Let me work on it. 6SJ7 01:50, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
OK, I have restored some of your editing. It may be that in the flurry of reverting (one of which was by you), I have still missed some of the changes. If I did and you want to make them again, make them, but please do not revert my section headings and everything again. We obviously still disagree on the one sentence that was added to the intro by another editor. We agree on the info box (see my comment on the talk page on July 31.) Also the sentence on the PNA representative to Europe or whatever, that you commented-out, I deleted completely. The PNA has nothing to do with the declared "State" and I think we agree on that. 6SJ7 02:09, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Irish Home Rule Act of 1914

Hi. I thought you might be interested to know that I've responded to your unanswered question on the talk page for the "Irish Home Rule Bill" article. For what it's worth, here's what I wrote:

Simplifying things a bit: the 1914 Act was supposed to have gone into effect in May, 1915, but the Suspensory Act 1914 (assented to on the same day as the home rule bill itself) put that into limbo for the duration of the war. Because in British law the war wasn't formally terminated until Aug. 31, 1921, the suspension of home rule was still in force when the Government of Ireland Act 1920 (which repealed the 1914 Act) was passed.

[edit] Israel lead paragraph

Greetings. If you get a chance, please have a look at my lead rewrite of Israel (the prior version read like a travel/ranking guide and almost entirely avoided touching on history). I tried to be understated, but have already met with an unspecified, blind reversion. Thanks. All the best, El_C 21:13, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Syria

No problems. I'm mostly just chopping, which is pretty easy to redo. Ashmoo 00:00, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SSNP

You've made some obviously informed edits at Syrian Social Nationalist Party in the past. Could I ask you to look in at Talk:Syrian Social Nationalist Party#Questionable recent edits? Thanks in advance. - Jmabel | Talk 06:07, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! This is one of those topics where I am certainly more clueful than a random American, but so far from expert that I hesitate to do more than point on the talk page to things that look wrong to me. - Jmabel | Talk 22:56, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pisgat Ze'ev

I blocked the one who was stirring trouble, the one who was reverted by multiple editors. You had an opportunity to opine on ANI - and many did. - crz crztalk 22:58, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Amoruso was defending the status quo, along with several others. Noone on ANI suggested a block for Amoruso. I stand by my decision. Please take this up further on ANI if you care. - crz crztalk 23:10, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm touched... lol - crz crztalk 23:26, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Greater Syria

Currently, the Greater Syria article is devoted exclusively to the political meaning, while Bilad al-Sham provides the historical and broader context. It's very convenient -- the only slight drawback being that in real life the meanings of these two terms are not sharply differentiated in this way. I'm not sure what the best way to fix this would be -- maybe providing suitable cross-article links would be better than trying to merge the articles, or duplicating the content of each one within the other...
