Palm Valley (Northern Territory)

Palm Valley is a north-south running valley in the MacDonnell Ranges 138 km southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory in Australia. It is the only place in the world where the Livistona Mariae palms grow (also known as Red Cabbage Palms). Walking the ancient valley floor beneath the groves of Red Cabbage Palms, the visitor obtains a glimpse of Central Australia’s tropical past. This unique area and its flora survives today despite the harsh and relentless surrounding desert.Palm Valley is part of Finke Gorge National Park.

The road to Palm Valley is only accessible with a 4WD vehicle. Much of the track is along the dry river bed of the Finke river. The road to Palm Valley starts at Hermannsburg and travels south, following the Finke river. 15 km from Hermanssburg, the river branches. Palm Valley is 1km to the west of this point.
