Palestine and Palestinian as the name of a geographical area or an ethnic nation, carries a number of current and historical interpretations:
- Palestine - also called the Palestine region, Eretz Israel or the "Holy Land", is the name of a geographical area, within the Middle East region located on the far east coast of the Mediterranean Sea (aka. "the Levant"). A part of the Ancient Near East, during the Bronze Age, the area was home to the Canaanite culture. The area is now claimed by both Arab Muslims and Jews as their ethnic ancestral "homeland". Since 1967, the area has been within the control of the Jewish state of Israel.
- The State of Palestine is a relatively recent attempt by the Palestinian National Authority to create a Palestinian state.
- The Palestinian people, many of whom are Palestinian refugees living both within the "Palestinian territories" (controversial term including the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem), and as both citizens and refugees of other countries. (While Jordan officially considers its citizens from the Palestine region to be Jordanian and not Palestinian, the ethnic nationality remains a factor of self-determination.)
- The term "Palestinian" once also referred to Jews living in Palestine. It has been deprecated since the establishment of Israel, and the term Israelis now applies.
