Palekh

Palekh (Russian: Палех) is an urban-type settlement in Ivanovo Oblast, Russia. It is located at 56°48′0″N, 41°51′30″E. Population: 5,814 (2002 Census).

Palekh emerged as a leading centre of the Russian icon- and mural-painting in the 19th century. A good example of the Palekh school are the murals and icons from the local Church of the Exaltation of the Cross (built in 1762–1774). Now, Palekh is famous primarily for its miniatures.
