Until the late seventies and eighties, Pageland remained a church-oriented town filled with family run businesses and restaurants. Three factors seem to figure most prominently in its change: the construction of a bypass around the town with fast-food restaurants rapidly being built there, the construction of a strip mall outside of town, and the increase in industry coming into town, though built on the outskirts of town. Many family businesses and restaurants no longer exist and two of the three main churches in town are barely sustaining enough membership to survive.
