Padma (nelumblum speciosum), an aquatic plant plays an important role in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism mythologies. It is representative of creation and cosmic renewal. It also represents purity as its flowers grow on long stalks, which are rooted in the mud. It is also symbolic of detachment as drops of water easily slide off its petals.

Padma, that is lotus, is believed to have originated from the naval of the Vishnu as a flower with thousand petals. On this flower sprouting out from Vishnu’s naval, Brahma is depicted as sitting. A number of divine figures are associated with the Padma, including Kubera and Lakshmi.
