[edit] Summary

Phidippus johnsoni (?) 18 mm. body length, female. These spiders are quite large for Salticidae (jumping spiders). Their red coloration and relatively slow speed to escape may make them attractive to children. Like other Salticidae they are capable of giving defensive bites that are about as painful as a bee sting. This particular spider was quite easy to handle and did not even make a threat display. Ordinarily, Salticidae will bite only upon being pinched or otherwise severely provoked. Photo January 2006 by Patrick Edwin Moran.
