P.T.R. Palanivel Rajan was born on February 22, 1932 in Theni in Tamil Nadu .He graduated from Madras Christian College and then studied Law at Madras Law College and was a practising lawyer before entering politics in 1968 when he joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.[1] He has served as the Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 2001.[2] He also was the Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments in the Government of Tamil Nadu briefly before his death on May 20, 2006 at the age of 74. [3] He was also a MLC twice.His family was instrumental in the reconstruction of the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple after a fire destroyed it over a century ago.Madurai Kamaraj University conferred the Doctor of Law on him (Honoris Causa) in 1997.[4] His father P. T. Rajan had served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
