Pérez is a Spanish-language surname. It was originally a patronymic meaning "son of Peter" (Pedro or Pero in Old Castilian), its English equivalent being Peterson. The surname is extremely common throughout the Hispanic world, and has a similar connotation to the surname Smith in English. The Portuguese equivalent of the surname is Peres or Pires, and it becomes Peris in Valencian.
