OZX-GU01A Gundam Geminass 01 is one of Gundam-type mobile suits in the manga series New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-Unit (released in America as Gundam: The Last Outpost).

[edit] History

Developed in secret at the asteroid belt colony MO-V, the Geminass was the first of Dr. Berg's experimental G-Units, advanced mobile suits which were intended to revolutionize warfare. As experimental models, the G-Units featured several new systems and construction methods which were designed to improve upon the standards set by machines like the OZ-00MS Tallgeese and its production model, the OZ-06MS Leo. The first of these technologies is the Unit System, from which the G-Unit derives part of its name; this system, designed to eliminate the need for environment-specific mobile suits, allows every part of the machine (except the cockpit) to be quick and easy to replace with a part better suited for a given situation. This process was aided by the fact that most of the G-Unit's major parts were held in place with interlocking bolts which could be taken out quickly. The second, and more important, of the G-Unit's new technologies is the PX System. This special system causes a brief period of super-charge, increasing the mobile suit's speed and power, as well as stimulating an adrenaline surge in the pilot. The side effect of this system is its volatile nature; if abused, the PX System can cause permanent damage to both the mobile suit and the pilot's brain.

The Geminass was intended as a basic model machine to show off the capabilities of the G-Units' new technologies. Its weapons include beam swords, featuring a higher output than the standard beam saber, and an accelerate rifle. This weapon fired highly charged muons in standard beam rifle fashion, but also had a spiral particle accelerator lining its barrel which allowed it to charge the beam, creating a high-damage blast nicknamed "Hyper Shot". The Geminass also carried a durable shield featuring a honeycomb construction. In its basic configuration, the Geminass was best suited for ground combat; however, by swapping out the shoulder and calf parts and adding a special thruster backpack, it could be adapted for space use in a matter of minutes.

Two Geminass units were constructed at MO-V. The first, Geminass 01, was painted white with blue, red and yellow accents and piloted by Adin Barnett, the colony's hotheaded young pilot. Initially feeling inadequate compared to his brother Odell, Adin sought to prove himself when OZ Prize began attacking the colony to get the G-Units. After learning of the five Gundams attacking the Alliance on Earth, and how the colonists thought of them as guardians, Adin declared Geminass 01 a Gundam and swore to use it to protect MO-V. Unfortunately, his brashness immediately after this nearly caused his death, as he charged headlong into battle with Prize's leaders, the Stardust Knights. Only through the intervention of Odell was Adin saved, though the act apparently cost the older Barnett brother his life. Coming to grips with the fact that he alone could defend the colony, Adin was able to activate the PX System to defeat the newly built OZ-10VMSX Gundam Aesculapius. When it became apparent that Geminass 01 wasn't enough to stop Prize, the Gundam was overhauled into the high mobility machine OZX-GU01LOB Gundam L.O. Booster.

[edit] Model Number Issues

When it first appears, Geminass 01 is given the model number X-GU01A. After MO-V signs up with OZ, however, it adds the familiar OZ- prefix to its name, resulting in what is considered its standard model number.

It should be noted that the Geminass 01's standard ground combat parts are referred to as A-Parts, while the space combat thruster set is called the B-Parts. This suggests that the OZX-GU01A model number refers to the ground combat Geminass 01, while the space version's proper designation is OZX-GU01B.

Two Geminass units were constructed at MO-V. The second, Geminass 02, was painted blue with dark blue, orange and yellow accents and piloted by Odell Barnett, recognized as MO-V's top pilot. Due to Odell's higher level of skill and focus, the PX System was enabled in Geminass 02, while it was disabled in Geminass 01 until Adin learned to control it. Even though the machine was state of the art, Odell often chose to use an ordinary OZ-06MS Leo instead, chosing to preserve the G-Unit Project's secrecy. As such, Geminass 02 only saw deployment twice: once in a test battle with Adin's Geminass 01, and again when OZ Prize's Stardust Knights lead a full-scale attack on MO-V. When Adin's overeagerness resulted in Geminass 01 being disabled and thrown towards a field of space mines, Odell used his PX System to save his brother at the cost of his mobile suit and apparently his life. Prize would later recover the Geminass 02's remains and use it to build the OZX-10VMSX Gundam Aesculapius for their own purposes.

[edit] History

During the Eve Wars, the asteroid colony MO-V's top pilot, Odell Barnett, was apparently killed while saving his brother Adin from a field of space mines. His OZX-GU02A Gundam Geminass 02 was recovered by OZ Prize and, under the supervision of Dr. Berg (who had invented the G-Units for MO-V, but was actually a spy working for the Romafeller Foundation), refitted the machine into the Gundam Aesculapius. Making good use of the Unit System, Aesculapius featured many common elements with the Geminass while changing more out for new ones. In its primary mode, Aesculapius funtioned as a high mobility mobile suit, making use of powerful thrusters on its backpack and shoulders and wielding a pair of beam swords stored in the shoulder armor. However, Aesculapius could also transform into a heavily armored close combat mode in which the shoulder armor transformed into heavy claws and the backpack covered the head, giving it the familiar OZ-styled "TV face". In close combat mode, its weapons included the python claws and the rapid shots mounted in them, which were essentially beam vulcans.

When it was first deployed, Aesculapius was piloted by OZ Prize's leader Rosshe Natono, who used it in a failed attempt to defeat Adin's OZX-GU01A Gundam Geminass 01, which was thwarted by Adin's first use of the PX System. Dissatisfied, Dr. Berg had Natono taken out of Aesculapius and gave it to a new pilot, the masked Silver Crown, who was capable of using the PX System and managed to beat Adin in their first battle. Silver remained with Prize during Valder Farkill's coup and proposed the plan to smash the abandoned asteroid Pandora into MO-V. However, when Pandora began decelerating and Adin discovered the hidden OZ-19MASX Gundam Griepe inside, Valder discovered that Silver Crown was actually Odell, helping his home from within Prize. During the battle at Pandora, Aesculapius lost its head to Farkill's OZ-15AGX Hydra Gundam. When Odell returned to MO-V, the damaged Gundam was refitted with a spare head from Geminass 02, as well as its accelerate rifle and G-Unit shield. Aesculapius would continue to serve as Odell's machine for the rest of the conflict, and parts of it would be used to make the final G-Unit. Aesculapius would also serve as the inspiration for the OZ-10VMSX2 Gundam Burnlapius, piloted by Rosshe's rival and former teammate Kratz Shelby.

[edit] Trivia

Aesculapius derives its name from Asclepius, the Greek god of healing. While the Japanese version of G-Unit uses the Latin spelling, the English version (printed by Tokyopop) uses the Greek spelling Asklepios.

Geminass Unit Two strongly resembles the Gundam Mk-II Titans colors from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Aesculapius' close combat mode is based off of the MSM-07 Z'Gok from Mobile Suit Gundam, a fact which G-Unit author Koichi Tokita alludes in the funnies included at the end of the manga.
