Oysterhead originally formed for what was intended to be an exclusive one-off live performance at the Saenger Theater, New Orleans on May 4, 2000. However, in 2001 Oysterhead reunited to record and release a 13 track album entitled The Grand Pecking Order, which featured 9 new tracks and was supported by a brief tour of North America.

In keeping with the tradition of jam bands, the songs "The Mountain" and "The Meadow" were entirely improvised, and "Pseudo Suicide" was extended to include elements from the Primus and Phish songs, "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver" and "Reba", respectively. Anastasio also changed the lyrics in "The Israelites", making reference to the other members of Primus and The Police.

The songs "Mr. Oysterhead", "Rubberneck Lions", "Owner Of The World" and "Pseudo Suicide" were later included on The Grand Pecking Order.
