Owlerton Stadium
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Owlerton Stadium is a greyhound racing track in Owlerton near Hillsborough in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and also home to the Sheffield Tigers Speedway team. It is operated by the A & S Leisure Group, the majority shareholder of which is Dave Allen. Allen is also the chairman of football team Sheffield Wednesday who play at the nearby Hillsborough Stadium, which coincidentally was originally named Owlerton Stadium.
[edit] History
The stadium was built in 1929 although the first National Greyhound Racing Club race was not held until 1932. It hosted the Sheffield Eagles' first ever game in 1984. The stadium was purchased by the A & S Leisure Group in 1991 and a £3m refurbishment followed. The stadium now hosts 260 race meetings each year which attract 300,000 visitors making it the sixth biggest NGRC track in the country.
