This article provides an introduction to the more specific articles that cover the history of English cricket from the end of the Napoleonic War until the end of the First World War. It therefore covers the years from 1816 until 1918.

Georgian cricket in the 18th century enjoyed uninterrupted progress and continuous development until it was abruptly curtailed after the 1810 season by the impact of the Napoleonic War. A partial recovery began in 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo and a more widespread return to normality can be observed from 1816. In addition, there was a discernible shift towards the adoption of roundarm bowling after 1816 and so the Napoleonic War acted as a delimiter of sorts between the two distinct historical eras of underarm bowling and roundarm bowling.

The County Championship was officially constituted at a meeting in December 1889 and began in the 1890 English cricket season. The commencement of the County Championship in 1890 coincided with the beginning of an era that has been called the Golden Age of Cricket, which lasted until 1914 and the outbreak of the First World War.
