Outside the Atmosphere (Japanese: 大気の外で - taiki no soto de) is the first episode of the Planetes TV series originally aired 2003-10-04.

Ai Tanabe arrives for her new job aboard the ISPV 7 space station, and comes to find that she is assigned to the Debris Section, also known derogatorily as Half Section. She begins training in extra-vehicular activity with Hachimaki as her instructor. Hachimaki and Tanabe go on a mission to de-orbit an INTO commemorative satellite
