Outer Rim Territories

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional Star Wars series, the Outer Rim Territories is the outermost part of the Star Wars galaxy.

During the long period of the Galactic Republic, the Outer Rims were almost isolated, this is due to many unchartered regions and planets, untouched for countless centuries. Because of this isolation from other worlds, it became a breeding ground for criminals and scum. Seen in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, the Galactic Empire's presence is made known in the area. Because of the Empire's corrupt type of government, many criminals still retained their criminal underworlds, such as the infamous Jabba the Hutt.

[edit] History

Many battles have occurred in outermost reaches, including the planets, Dantooine, Hoth, Muunilinst, Geonosis and many others. Many of these battles took place during the Clone Wars which left no part of the galaxy untouched by war. In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker mentions to his wife that he has been fighting for three months in the Outer Rim Sieges.

Following the Clone Wars, Emperor Palpatine, ordered the elimination of the Jedi, starting the Great Jedi Purge. With almost all the Jedi killed, many survivors went into hiding, including the old and wise Jedi Master Yoda, who fled the Empire, and landed on the isolated swamp planet, Dagobah. Afterwards, the Emperor appointed Moff Tarkin as the governor of the outer rim worlds, and the purpose of the Death Star was to intimidate them into submission.

The wide desert planet Tatooine, located near Hutt Space region, became the home of quite a few Star Wars characters, such as the young and adventurous Luke Skywalker, and Biggs Darklighter before joining the Rebel Alliance against the Empire. Luke's father, the presently infamous Darth Vader, also lived on Tatooine as a young boy during Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The self-exiled Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi was hiding on Tatooine, due to its location. While there, he assumed the name Ben Kenobi. He and Master Yoda (as explained in Revenge of the Sith), believed it best to leave the infant Luke with his "family". Obi-Wan would live near to protect the young Skywalker and train him in the ways of the Force when ready.
