Our Lady, Queen of Ireland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Our Lady, Queen of Ireland, is used as the term for the shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary set up following a Marian apparition in Knock, Ireland, in 1879. The island of Ireland is predominantly Catholic, and as the Catholic Church organises on an All-Ireland basis, therefore, Queen of Ireland seems an apt title for such an apparition.

The apparition holds great significance for fans of football club, Celtic FC of Glasgow, who, although based in Scotland, have strong Irish connections. Another reason for Celtic fans' view of the Blessed Virgin is their admiration for His late Holiness Pope John Paul II, who was known to be sincerely devoted to the Blessed Virgin. Our Lady of the Isle's is also used in the Roman Catholic islands such South Uist and Barra in Scotland.
