Other Windsor, 6th Earl of Plymouth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other Archer Windsor (1789-1833) was the 12th Baron Windsor and the 6th Earl of Plymouth. Although little is known about him, Other is commemorated by an obelisk bearing his name, situated in the Lickey Hills Country Park and visible from Bromsgrove.
In 1789, Other, the eldest son, inherited his title from his father, the 5th Earl of Plymouth, along with his father's land at Tardebigge, the country seat Hewell Grange, and land in Shropshire and Glamorgan.
He married Mary Sackville in 1811.
He was admitted to the House of Lords long before the climax of the French Revolution and was involved in the creation of the Worcester Yeomanry Division which fought under Royal Prerogative in Spain. Also during his tenure, the Birmingham and Worcester Canal was built through Tardebigge and good taxes were collected from the nailmakers of Redditch.
The canal passes very close to Hewell Grange and was finished ten years after Other inherited his father's title (the canal was finished in 1799; however the reservoirs were built twenty years later, and finished in 1836). Other bought Barnt Green House from the tenant Yates family who had resided there for some years.
On Other's death, the title 'Earl of Plymouth' fell into abeyance and nobody succeeded him directly. The family continued as Lord Windsor and the title was remade for his ancestor, Robert George Windsor-Clive.
His unusual forename 'Other' is traditional in the family and derives from a legendary Viking ancestor 'Otho' or 'Othere'.
