Osorno is a city of 150,000 inhabitants (census 2002) located in the South zone of Chile, capital of the Osorno Province in the Los Lagos Region. Are 945 km to the south of the capital of the country, Santiago, 110 km to the north of Puerto Montt (the regional capital) and 260 km to the west of the Argentina city of San Carlos de Bariloche to who she is united through international route 215

The city originally was founded by Pedro de Valdivia in 1553 on the place where was the indigenous village Chauracahuin, under the name of Santa Marina de Gaete. After the death of Valdivia the city is left. The 27 of March of 1558 are reconstructed by the governor García Hurtado de Mendoza, Marquis of Cañete with the name of Villa de San Mateo de Osorno, in honor to their grandfathers, Count de Osorno (in Spain). A year later is surrounded by the natives and destroyed in 1602. Tomás de Figueroa the 22 of November of 1792 take possession from the ruins. Under the order of Ambrosio O'Higgins, the city of Osorno is reconstructed, and in 1796 it is declared officially re populated. After this O'Higgins profit it receives the title of Marquess of Osorno. In century XIX, the government of Chile brings to colonos German so that they help in the growth of the region. These helped to that the commune transformed itself into the epicenter of the National Cattle ranch of Chile, giving therefore an economic impulse to the own region. At the Osorno present time it conserves in his centric streets six colorful wood typical houses of century XIX that have been declared National Monument, and that are a imperdible visit when crossing the city.
