Osea is a fictional country that was first introduced in the PlayStation 2 video game Ace Combat 5 by Namco, and was later featured in its sequel Ace Combat Zero. Osea is said to be the world's largest superpower, however Yuktobania rivals it in size as well as military might.

[edit] Location

The Osean Federation is located in the western and center of the so-called 'Osean continent', which amounts to about 60% of its land mass. There is no numerical estimate to the size of Osea, but it's estimated that Osea is at least 3 or 4 times the size of Belka before The Belkan War, (which itself is estimated to be around 12,335,000² Km), and appears to be larger than the United States in the real world.

Osea is a vast nation, with Ceres Ocean on its Northwest coast, the Pacific Ocean bordering the Southwest coast, and Oured Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in the Southeast. It was bordered by Belka and Sapin before The Belkan War, but after Osea gained North Osea in the conflict with Belka, it added Ustio to its list of bordering nations. It is bordered by the Wellow Islands in the North.

[edit] Climate

While little is known of Osea's climate, it can be interpreted that Osea has a mainly temperate climate, with forests and plains, although this is difficult to assert, as one spends little time over Osea that isn't spent over urban areas. It has a large inland sea, and an Arctic climate in the far north.

  • Apito - A city near Oured with an international airport, the civilian airport was attacked by Yuktobanians during the Circum-Pacific War, but the attack was repelled with few casualties.
  • Bana City - A college city featuring a Brooklyn Bridge look-alike called the Marvin Bridge. The city was subjected to nerve gas terrorist attacks by Yuktobanian special forces in retaliation to an attack on a Yuktobanian college attributed to the Oseans. The crisis was settled with neutralizers dropped from the air and the terrorists were arrested.
  • Basset Space Center - The "Bridge into Space", a long mass driver was built here to service the Arkbird while in orbit. It was attacked by Yuktobanian planes and tanks to prevent a launch that would arm the Arkbird with a superlaser capable of firing from space. The attack was repelled, and the launch was successful.
  • Eaglin Straits - 2km across and opens out to the Ceres Ocean. A highway bridge carrying Highway OS101 crosses the strait. The Osean Navy gathered here in order to launch an attack on Yuktobania, but the operation was interrupted by Yuktobanian forces, who sank two of the three aircraft carriers with the Scinfaxi, a submarine armed with burst missiles cabable of underwater launch. The remaining carrier, the Kestrel, was unharmed.
  • Hierlark AFB- A former South Belkan airbase, the airbase is now used by the Oseans as a training base for OADF recruits. This where Wardog Squadron trained, and Galm flew out of to attack Mt. Shirim.
  • Kirwin Island - the island where the Osean carrier "Kestrel" was stationed through most of the missions of the Razgriz Squadron.
  • November City - The second largest city in Osea with approximately 5 million people. It is situated in a basin with a river flowing through it. November City features a tower resembling the CN Tower and a large stadium. The city was attacked by Yuktobanian air forces during a speech by the Vice President of Osea in the stadium. Captain Alvin "Chopper" Davenport, one of the Wardogs, was killed here.
  • Oured - Capital of the Osean Federation. A massive metropolitan city with about 15 million people, probably one of the largest in the world. Positioned at the tip of a pennisuila to Oured Bay, the city was threatened by the descending SOLG, armed with Belkan V2 MIRV Missiles, which would have obliterated the city as well as anything in over a hundred mile radius. Fortunatetly, the SOLG was destroyed by the Ghosts of Razgriz before it could activate its payload.
  • Port St. Hewlett - A port city with a naval base, presumably based on Pearl Harbor; it was attacked by the Yuktobanians in a pre-emptive strike. The aircraft carrier Kestrel was stationed here while it happened, but it escaped into open sea relatively unscarred.
  • Sand Island - an island situated between Osea and Yuktobania. Probably based on Midway Atoll, in both appearance and importance (In fact, one of the Islands in the Midway Atoll is called Sand Island). A small Osean Air Defence Force detachment is posted there, and before the beginning of the Circum-Pacific War it was manned by mostly "nuggets", or pilots in training. However, in the early weeks of the war, it became an epicenter for both Yuktobanian and Osean activity, as Yuktobania launched several raids on the advanced position, leading up to the attempted amphibious, ground/sea invasion of Sand Island. The attack failed, however, and resulted in the destruction of one of Yuktobania's best weapons, the Scinfaxi. Meanwhile, the surviving pilots of Sand Island became the top pilots of the OADF. As the war dragged on, the fighting moved away from Sand Island, but it had one more important event left. After narrowly escaping the 8492nd Squadron over the Vladimir Mountains, Major Allen Hamiliton, who was really working for Belka, branded them as traitors. Cornered, the remaining pilots of Wardog, along with Genette and 'Pops', escaped on training jets. After the war, Sand Island was abandoned by the Osean Military, but not by everyone, it seems.
  • Solo Island - An island chain in the northern Ceres Ocean, this area served as an aircraft scrapyard. Its volcanic activity causes radar interferences, which allowed the Wardog Squadron to escape the 8492nd Squadron when they were framed.

[edit] Military

Osea possesses enormous military powers, mainly consisting of "Defense Forces", although technically defense forces do not carry out offensive military strikes. Osea has a large Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Army that are normally charged with the defense of Osea, that case was made exceptional with the events of Ace Combat 5 when the Osean Defense Forces were pressed into service as a regular military force.

[edit] History

[edit] Before the Belkan War

The known history of Osea doesn't go back so far; it starts from before the Belkan War.

Osea and Yuktobonia seemed to be in a Cold War like standoff, which led to the drawing up of super weapons, although they wouldn't be implemented until later down the road. Meanwhile, Belka, a previously industrious, wealthy nation suffered a major blow to its economy, thanks to the cecedence of areas like Ustio and lack of the materials those areas provided.

Seeking to make a profit, several Osean companies made a deal with Belka. By selling the Great Lakes region to Osea, Belka would get a high percentage of the material mined there. Eager to improve their faltering economy, the Belkans accepted the terms, only to find that the claims were falsified; there was little precious material to be mined there. This hastened the collapse of the Belkan economy, and thus hastening the rise of fascism in Belka.

[edit] The Belkan War

On March 25th 1995, the Belkans stormed the borders of Osea, Sapin, and Ustio, using Blitzkrieg war tactics, a combined assault of ground troops with heavy air support. This caught the nations by surprise, and the latter two were nearly completely annexed.

By mid April, though, the Belkan advanced stalled, and the long, hard push back into Belka began. Through heavy fighting, the Allies, now supported by Yuktobania and various other countries, were in control of most of South Belka. Only two obstacles stood in the Allies way of the Belkan heartland, Sudentor, the capital of South Belka, and Stier in the Waldreich's, a mountain range that separated the Belkas and where the North Belkan forces had retreated to. Rather than split the army in two, the Allies opted to leave three divisions to contain the remanants of the battle-weary South Belkan Army, while the rest attacked the main force in Waldriech.

After a couple of weeks of intense fighting, the Belkans realized they could no longer hold the South/North Belkan border, so on June 6th, 1995, they committed an unthinkable act, they dropped seven nuclear bombs on the valley that connected the Belkas, forming an impenetratable barrier of nuclear radiation, but in doing so, they practically eliminated the population of Stier. Seeing the events unfold before them, the Allies opted not to follow the North Belkan forces, and end the war in the north.

The war was not entirely over though. Using the confusion caused by the EMP discharge from the nuclear explosions, the South Belkan army charged the Allies lines at Sudentor. Although the onslaught was great, the Allies held their ground, and in the end the end the Belkans ran out of steam. With no resources to look to, its country in shambles, Belka finally surrendered on June 20th, 1995.

During the war, Osea sought to deploy the Strategic Orbital Linear Gun (SOLG) as a superweapon. It was meant to launch MIRV missiles at ground targets. However, before the SOLG could be deployed, the war came to a close.

In the midst of the war, two Osean sqaudrons, who had just about enough of the seemingly endless fighting, defected from the OADF and founded the radical globalization group called A World With No Boundaries, which tried to eliminate the concept of borders by terrorist acts, but were unsuccessful and was dismantled.

[edit] Aftermath and Before the Circum-Pacific War

The Arkbird.

After the conflict ended, Osea, feeling a little bit responsible for the Belkan War, took a more liberal turn. Relations with Yuktobania rapidly improved from its pre-Belkan War state of Cold War-esqe plodding, and significant arms reduction programs were put into place. an age of prosperity seemed to loom over the world, and it felt like this great era of peace would last forever.

Some Osean officials, however, weren't as pleased. Some of them were hardline, anti-Yuke warmongers, who looked for any excuse to go to war with Yuktobania. The then-newly elected Osean President Harling, however, kept them mostly in check with budget cuts to the military, causing many of them to leave. Peace developed between the two nations, and they often collaborated in major projects like the Arkbird, an orbital spacecraft.

However, strange events took place within the Osean Government. In September of 2010, unidentified planes were spotted flying into Osean Airspace from the west. Officials insisted it was nothing, but even they had no clue at to what was truly happening.

Then, in late September, a flight of trainees and their instructor ran into a squadron of planes of unknown origins. The flight lead, Captain Jack "Heartbreak One" Bartlett, believing the squadrons were approaching at a high altitude, ordered the trainees to fly to a low altitude, where he thought they would avoid an engagement. The information he was given was incorrect; he had placed them directly in front of the unknown aircraft. 8 pilots died in the ensuing engagement. Any info regarding the engagement was classified, even pictures of the single trainee, Kei "Edge" Nagase, who survived the dogfight. Despite denials from the Osean Government pertaining to the skirmish, it was actually the beginning of the Circum-Pacific War.

[edit] The Circum-Pacific War

Unknown planes continued to make incursions over western Osea. A few days later, the survivors of the engagement, Cpt. Bartlett and Lt. Nagase, as well as two trainee pilots, Lt. Alvin H. "Chopper" Davenport and another unnamed lieutenant (commonly referred to as "Blaze"), tried to flag down a damaged spy plane of unknown origin. However, their attempt ended when additional unmarked fighters arrived to cover the spy plane. The 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Wardog (The Sand Island air squadron) shot down all the fighters, and the Blackbird crashed during the engagement.

Osean Centeral Command remained both angry at the Wardogs for engaging without clearance, and uncertain as to what was going on. Once again, they censored all information about the event, and continued to detain Albert Genette, a reporter who had witnessed the first engagement while flying in Cpt. Bartlett's F-4. A few days later the Sand Island Squadron delt with another incursion by reconnaissance aircraft (this time a ship and UAVs) and unmarked fighters. While the Sand Island Squadron was on its mission, in an apparent move of self-motivated aggression, Yuktobania declared war on Osea and attacked Osea's 3rd Fleet at Port St. Hewlett.

Many people were confused over why Osea's ally, Yuktobania, would declare war, but some officials in the militaries and governments of both countries were secretly thrilled with the prospect of the war they had longed for. In Osea case, there wasn't much to celebrate at the moment. Yuktobania delivered a one-two punch; first attacking Osea's naval center at Port St. Hewlett, then the major airbase and first line of defense at Sand Island. Only through the help of the Wardog Squadron, minus its commanding officer, Captain Bartlett, did the Oseans keep the day from being a complete disaster.

Osean commanders decided to rendezvous the Osean 3rd Fleet in Eaglin Straits to prepare for a counter attack. This operation turned into a disaster, as the remainder of the Osean 3rd Fleet, three Nimitz-class Aircraft Carriers (the Kestrel, the Buzzard, and the Vulture), were ambushed by the Yuktobanian submersible aircraft carrier Scinfaxi. The superweapon Scinfaxi first launched an airstrike on the fleet, but, when that failed, launched a volley of burst missiles at Eaglin Straits. While the Buzzard and the Vulture were sunk, the Kestrel managed to survive, however the sinking of two aircraft carriers shifted the war firmly in favor of Yuktobania. With the discovery of this Yuktobanian superweapon Osean High Command issued an order to arm the Arkbird, recently completed in President Harling's peaceful development plan, with a tactical laser. The SSTO carrying the laser barely made it off the ground, as the Yuktobanians attacked the mass driver during the launch preparations, likely through information delivered by spies. Who it was made clear in time. Once again, Wardog Sq found itself on the front lines, and successfully beat off the attack. The failed assault cost the Yuktobanians several transports, tanks, fighters, and four state-of-the art B-2 bombers.

The Sand Island detachment, who had recently added Hans Grimm to the Wardog Squadron, and a flight of nuggets fresh from basic flight training at Heirlark AFB, a former Belkan base in North Osea, were tasked with stopping an invasion fleet from taking Sand Island. Things were going smoothly until the Scinfaxi appeared. Despite the valiant efforts of Wardog and the Arkbird, all the rookies were shot down. Luckily, the Scinfaxi was eliminated due to the combined powers of the Arkbird and the Wardog Squadron.

A few weeks went by with relative peace. Refreshed by the idea of using the Arkbird to bring Yuktobania to the negotiation table, Harling attempted to hold peace talks in North Point, a neutral Usean nation where ISAF had its GHQ to defend from Erusea, in late October. Several hardliners, however, were not so enthusiastic. They couldn't let him end the war they had worked so far. Harling's plane never landed in North Point after the mysterious 8492nd Squadron intercepted it.

After the president's departure, the administration's policy, now being decided by the vice president, dramatically changed. Osea prepared an invasion force of around half a million men. The neutralization of the Arkbird further complicated things. After a hard fought victory at Volna beach on the Bastok Peninsula, Wardog destroyed the retreating airborne forces from Bastok. Although the mission was a success, Wardog was blamed for attacking a civilian engineering college. They were called back to the capital for a tribunal, but were quickly sent back to the front when they proved their worth by defending either an airport where refrence to Ace Combat 4 when a report from an Erusean airliner was transmitted, or a the city of Bana. After destroying some Yuktobanian supplies, the Oseans took part in a daring advance into central Yuktobania, but it was only possible thanks to Wardog.

As they continued to push north towards the Yuktobanian capital of Cinigrad, it seemed nothing could stop them, not the Jilachi Desert, nor the massive Cruik Fortress, and although both battles were bloody, the support of Wardog Sqadron pushed the land forces to victory. The loss of the Razgriz (the adopted name of Wardog, after hearing the Yukes call them that) came as shock to the military as a whole, but the military pushed on towards Cinigrad would fall. Unfortunately for Osea, the army bogged down, and the Yuktobanian capital remained out of reach.

Like its namesake, Stalingrad, the advance of the invaders stopped at Cinigrad. The large size of the Yuktobanian population came into play, and after making a good early showing, they began to give up ground. Slowly, but surely, the Yukes were retaking their land. Little did either government know, but the Belkans were secretly playing on both sides of the court and trying to exhaust both sides.

The OFS Kestrel, with a massively reduced airwing, and her fleet found President Harling in captivity in Stier Castle in Belka and conducted a rescue operation, eventually returning him to Oured. The Kestrel and her small yet very effective airwing would also rescue Prime Minister Nikanor of Yuktobania, also kidnapped by Belka. The Kestrel's air wing became known as the Ghosts of Razgriz around this time, as their fighting style and effectiveness brought memories of the presumed-dead Wardog Squadron. The Razgriz would fight both Osean and Yuktobanian forces while protecting a joint task force of "traitorous" Osean and Yuktobanian ships carrying Prime Minister Nikanor. The Razgriz stopped the enemy fleet from destroying the joint fleet, although the Kestrel was sunk by submarine-launched Silkworms. The next day, Harling reappeared in the capital with Nikanor and, in a joint live press conference, they explained to the people of both countries the true cause of the war due to treachery of the Belkans. The Circum-Pacific War, with the exception of a few die-hards and mop-up operations, was over.

The descent of the SOLG
The descent of the SOLG

The warmongers from both sides didn't give up, and they tried to use the old Strategic Orbital Linear Gun developed during the Belkan War by the Oseans in 1995. Scrapped because the Belkan War ended before the SOLG could be deployed, they secretly resurrected the SOLG and made it fully operational. The warmongers used their loyal troops to protect the Belkans in Sudentor in an effort to obtain the V1 weapon promised to them by the Belkans, not knowing of the V2 MIRV missiles on the SOLG. However, with the treachery of the warmongers and Belkans now known, the Yuktobanian and Osean forces united behind the Razgriz Squadron to attack the die-hards. With Razgriz leading the assault, the Allied Forces overwhelmed the defenders of Sudentor and destroyed the SOLG's ground control station. Unfortunately, the SOLG's failsafe in case of the destruction of ground control brought down onto the planet, with its impact point targeted in Oured. Lifting off on a final mission, the Razgriz attacked the descending satellite, destroying the SOLG before it made impact with the city.
