Orwell is a town in Addison County in the US state of Vermont. The population was 1,185 at the 2000 census. Mount Independence was the largest fortification constructed by the American Colonial forces. The 300 acre site is now one of Vermont's premier State-owned historic sites.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 128.7 km² (49.7 mi²). 122.7 km² (47.4 mi²) of it is land and 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it (4.63%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,185 people, 441 households, and 340 families residing in the town. The population density was 9.7/km² (25.0/mi²). There were 577 housing units at an average density of 4.7/km² (12.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.24% White, 0.08% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.42% Asian, and 0.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population.

There were 441 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.5% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% were non-families. 17.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,978, and the median income for a family was $42,438. Males had a median income of $29,671 versus $23,304 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,835. About 6.2% of families and 10.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.4% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over.
