Orthodontic spacer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Orthodontic spacers are used in orthodontics before braces are applied on teeth. Spacers are little rubber bands placed between teeth with floss. In some cases, an orthodontist may use a metal spacer, which looks like a tiny metal hinge. The spacers stay between the teeth for about two weeks and move the teeth apart slightly. Spacers are worn all day until the orthodontist removes them. Sometimes, a dentist may use a spacer that is simalar to a metal spacer(see above), but it is removable and in some cases you have to use a key to ajust. These types of spacers are very simalar to a retainer because of their ability to be removed. They are taken out before braces are put on. Spacers are sometimes painful, although pain relievers can palliate the pain.
