Orta San Giulio is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Novara in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 100 km northeast of Turin and about 40 km northwest of Novara. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,170 and an area of 6.8 km2.[1]
The town is built largely on a promontory which juts out from the eastern bank of Lake Orta close to the island of San Giulio. It is well-known for the nearby Sacro Monte, which is a site of pilgrimage and worship and, like the town itself and the island, is a popular destinatation for fairly small-scale tourism.
The municipality of Orta San Giulio contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Legro, Corconio, and Imolo.
Orta San Giulio borders the following municipalities: Ameno, Bolzano Novarese, Gozzano, Miasino, Pella, Pettenasco, and San Maurizio d'Opaglio.
