Orleans County is a county located in the U.S. state of Vermont. As of 2000, the population was 26,277. Its shire town is Newport6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,868 km² (721 mi²). There are 37.7 persons per square mile. 1,807 km² (698 mi²) of it is land and 61 km² (23 mi²) of it (3.25%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 26,277 people, 10,446 households, and 7,155 families residing in the county. The population density was 15/km² (38/mi²). There were 14,673 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.16% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

94.5% were born in the United States. 90.2% spoke English at home.

There were 10,446 households out of which 32.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% were married couples living together, 9.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% were non-families. 25.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.91. 74.1% of the population owned their own homes. 14.9% lived in multi-unit dwellings. The average value of owner occupied homes was $78,800.

In the county, the population was distributed by age as follows: 25.10% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $31,084, and the median income for a family was $36,630. Males had a median income of $27,964 versus $20,779 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,518. About 10.60% of families and 14.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.90% of those under age 18 and 10.90% of those age 65 or over.
