Orient is a city in Adair County, Iowa, United States. The population was 402 at the 2000 census. Vice President Henry A. Wallace was born near here.

Orient is located at 41°12′10″N, 94°25′8″W (41.202702, -94.418794)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 402 people, 167 households, and 111 families residing in the city. The population density was 330.2/km² (863.4/mi²). There were 179 housing units at an average density of 147.0/km² (384.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.51% White, 0.25% Native American, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.24% of the population.

There were 167 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $35,750, and the median income for a family was $39,219. Males had a median income of $28,438 versus $21,477 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,937. About 3.2% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.6% of those under age 18 and 17.3% of those age 65 or over.
