[edit] Notes
- Waiting For The Man is a cover of a The Velvet Underground song, originally titled I'm Waiting for the Man.
- Almost, I Betray My Friends, Taking Sides Again, and Waiting for the Man were all released as B-sides and had earlier appeared on the 2001 Navigation - The OMD B-sides compilation.
- The band chose to perform the song "Dancing" on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1980. "Dancing" was never released as a single.
[edit] "Electricity" and "Almost" Confusion
There are many differing versions of the two songs that were present on OMD's debut single. After the band left Factory Records, DinDisc attempted twice to score a hit with Electricity. Consequently, four versions of Electricity and three of Almost exist.
Electricity and Almost were originally produced by Martin Hannett, to be released by Factory Records. A compromise was reached for the versions used on the single since the band felt Hannett had overproduced them somewhat. This first Factory single contains the band's first version of Electricity and the Hannett version of Almost. Hannett's version of Electricity wound up on the second release of the single (along with the same (his) version of Almost). The two bonus tracks on the re-issued debut album are the Hannett versions. The band's first versions of Electricity and Almost (produced by Paul Collister and OMD) are now also available on CD; on the Peel Sessions and Navigation respectively.
The album versions of Electricity and Almost differ from the band's first two attempts at producing these songs, and were used for the third and final release of the single. This version of Electricity was remixed from the original Hannett version. It's also the version used on the 1988 Best Of and the 1998 Singles collections and is the best known version of the song. These versions were again produced by Paul Collister and OMD.
A fourth mix of Electricity exists (produced by Mike Howlett) and can be found as a bonus track on the re-issue of Organisation. This version can be distinguished by its extended instrumental section in the middle. To clarify:
- FAC6 (21st May, 1979): OMD's first single. The band's first version of Electricity b/w Hannett's version of Almost.
- DIN2 (28th September, 1979): The single is re-released to coincide with the band signing to DinDisc. Hannett's versions of Electricity and Almost.
- DIN2 (31st March, 1980): A third attempt to score a hit. The versions used here were the band's second attempts at the songs; the same as on the debut album and the same version of Electricity as on the Best Of and Singles.
- DID2 (22nd February, 1980): OMD's debut album. Contains the same versions as on the third single release (the band's second versions).
- CDV2908 (24th April, 2000): The Peel Sessions CD. Contains the band's first version of Electricity, as featured on the first release of the single (FAC6).
- CDV2938 (14th May, 2001): Navigation - The OMD B-Sides: Contains the band's first version of Almost, never previously released.
- DIDCDR2 (10th March, 2003): The re-issue of the debut album. Contains the album versions (the second attempts by the band) as well as both of Hannett's versions as bonus tracks.
- DIDCDR6 (10th March, 2003): The re-issue of Organisation. Contains a fourth version of Electricity, released nowhere else.
