Orange Public Transportation

The Orange Public Transportation program, a division of the Orange County Department on Aging, offers van and bus service outside the Chapel Hill-Carrboro city limits including planning and coordinating for county residents with transportation needs. It serves the general public and the clients of community service agencies, primarily in rural areas of Orange County, NC. It is advised on its operations by the Orange County Transportation Advisory Board. It is currently directed by Jerry M. Passmore, supervised by Al Terry, dispatched by Cindie Skinner, and scheduled by Serena Wells.

[edit] Areas Served

OPT serves all of Orange County outside Chapel Hill and Carrboro city limits. Within those towns, Chapel Hill Transit provides scheduled bus service and E-Z Rider service for senior citizens and people with disabilities. It connects with the Triangle Transit Authority.

[edit] Transportation Assistance

Residents over 60 years of age who cannot afford Chapel Hill Transit bus passes are able to apply for free passes from the OPT. The Orange County Donated Vehicle Ownership Program is coordinated by the Department on Aging in cooperation with the Department of Social Services and the Commission of Women. For the purpose of providing clients with transportation for work-related activities, the program provides an opportunity for citizens to receive a tax credit by donating vehicles to eligible Orange County residents who are in a transportation crisis and/or are in a low-income category.

[edit] General Public Bus Service

The Triangle Transit Authority ant the OPT partnered to provide an improved public route (TTA route 420) between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, NC. The route serves the downtown Hillsborough, Triangle Sportsplex, Chapel Hill north shopping center, downtown Chapel Hill, and UNC Hospitals.

People who live in some areas not served by the regular bus can arrange to be taken from a pickup point to the nearest bus stop.

[edit] Special Agency Bus and Van Services

OPT transports clients of Orange County community service organizations, such as the Department of Social Services and the Orange Enterprises Inc. routes, operated under contract, transport people with ongoing transportation needs. The service is open to the general public, but seating is limited, with priority for people with employment and training needs.

[edit] Special Events Trips

Community service groups and qualifying agencies are invited to lease vehicles for preplanned trips to locations within and outside Orange County. Destinations of the service include the North Carolina Zoo, the North Carolina State Fair, and the area shopping malls. This service is offered based upon availability and requires advanced notice.

General public fares are $2.00 per trip, while senior citizens (60+ years old) and handicapped persons are offered a reduced fair of $1.00 per trip.
