Orange Moon Over Brooklyn
(2005)

Orange Moon Over Brooklyn is an album by Pumpkinhead, an American hip hop musician signed to Soulspazm Records. The entire album is produced by Pumpkinhead's good friend, Marco Polo, except for "Monkey Shine", which is produced by Moss. For this album, Pumpkinhead decided to deviate from his usual "battle rapper" style, and attempt to delve into deeper lyrics. "This album is more reflective," says Pumpkinhead. "It's about family and friends and definitely more of a well-rounded hip-hop album to me. I made sure that the rhymes are not just for my peoples in the streets but for everyone to related to-your average nerd, backpacker, whomever."[1]

[edit] Content

Orange Moon Over Brooklyn is filled with a surprising amount of concept songs. "Jukebox" is a good example of a concept song in which Pumpkinhead takes the titles of various famous hip-hop songs and uses them to create sentences.

I "Know The Ledge"[2], but she didn't understand
I could get psycho, and "Just Kill A Man"[3]
"Tonight's The Night"[4], "My Uzi Weighs A Ton"[5] under my heathcoat
I'm "Poppa Large"[6], big shot of the East Cost

"Grenades" is one of Pumpkinhead's most controversial songs to date. The song attacks American president George W. Bush, and his father, George H.W. Bush.

Give me a bulldozer, and before the world is over
I'll find Bush and his daddy and run both their asses over
The Bush's are trigger happy, and wanna be in the war
Two people that like raising taxes and killing the poor

There is also a fair share of upliftment throughout the album. "The Best" and "Rock On" are two superb tracks that are based on positive subject matter. The latter of the two explains why Pumpkinhead keeps rapping, even though obstacles are constantly being thrown at him.

Spittin heat for ten years and haven't been signed once
How I'm 'sposed to blow up, when independent labels front
Don't pay up, don't promote, your record label sucks
You got MC's out there that deserve to get put on
So for them, I'm gonna rock rock rock on

However, Pumpkinhead also returns to his truest form, with battle tracks like "Trifecta" and "Swordfish". Both tracks feature guests who drop pretty impressive verses, but Pumpkinhead also shines through. The following is from "Swordfish":

Split split wigs, not a barber but I give a fade like scissor blades
Lyrics spray and riccochet off your fricken face
I'm in the place like I just got repremanded
So strong and I get pounds, dudes get mad 'cause I'm heavy handed
This is high power, full voltage to the meter
From a swordfish that'll poke a hole in your speaker
