In the Pokémon anime, the Orange Islands chain, also known as the Orange Archipelago is an extensive island chain consisting of various active islands. The archipelago is different climatically from Kanto, which is temperate while the archipelago is tropical. One effect of the different climate is that Pokémon found there are of a different color. While many people inhabit these islands, the most notable are the Orange Crew, the four Gym Leaders who live on four of the islands. They are Cissy, Danny, Rudy, and Luana.

It should be noted that the Orange Islands are unique in that there is no game equivalent, though the Sevii Islands come very close. The Orange Archipelago only exists in the anime and the The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga.

[edit] Gym battles

Gym battles in the Orange Archipelago differ from those on the mainland because the Orange Crew do not require challengers to actually fight them. Instead, they wish to test their loyalty to their Pokémon and vice-versa with various tests (for example, Danny has a Trainer use his/her Pokémon to freeze a geyser of hot water and then carve it into a sled for racing).

[edit] Other notable characters

There are a few other characters of note on the Orange Archipelago. Professor Felina Ivy works on Valencia Island with her three assistants Faith, Hope, and Charity. Other notable residents include Prima, none other than Lorelei, a local Pokémon Master and member of Kanto’s Elite Four (this would be later referenced in Pokémon Firered and Leafgreen’s Sevii Islands); Mateo, a glass sculptor who lives on Sunburst Island and takes his inspiration from a rare, reclusive Crystal Onix; and Melody, a young girl who lives on Shamouti Island and plays the flute in an annual ceremony there.

In Pokémon: The Movie 2000, the Kanto region legendary birds and Lugia live around this area.

Most of the islands are actually named after varieties of oranges, or other citrus fruits.

[edit] Pinkan Island

In Episode #90 of the anime (In The Pink), Ash and friends are sucked into a whirlpool and appear on the other side, near an island called the Pinkan Island. This is a secret island where all of the native Pokémon are tinted pink, having grown up eating Pinkan berries that cause this change in color. Officer Jenny works hard in her Jeep to protect these pink Pokémon from criminals like Team Rocket, and so far, she has done an excellent job.

[edit] Grapefruit Islands

The seven Grapefruit Islands is where Ash captures his second Pokémon in the Orange Islands. Ash captures a Snorlax that had being eating all the grapefruits and had to be stopped. At the end, thanks by the help of Jigglypuff's singing which puts everyone to sleep and Pikachu's thunderbolt, Ash captures his Snorlax and saves the grapefruit.

[edit] Kumquat Island

Luana is the fourth and final member of the Orange Crew located in Kumquat Island. Luana the gym leader runs many hotels and battles Ash. At the end Ash defeats Luana and receives a jadestar badge.
