Operation Herbstnebel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

History records two German military operations called Herbstnebel (Autumn Mist in English). Neither was carried out.

  • Operation Herbstnebel was a plan created by Field Marshal Walther Model for an offensive against the Western Allies at the end of 1944. Both it and Operation Martin, created by von Rundstedt were proposed; Operation Martin was adopted, and became Operation Wacht am Rhein, which was launched in December 1944 and is known as the Battle of the Bulge.
  • Operation Herbstnebel was also the name given to a 1944 staff proposal to withdraw German troops in Italy behind the Po River. It was rejected by Hitler.
