Opera Atelier

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Opera Atelier is a Canadian opera company featuring performances of 17th and 18th century Baroque opera, ballet and drama. Opera Atelier was founded in Toronto in 1985 by husband and wife duo Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Zingg. As co-artistic directors, Pynkoski and Zingg emphasize producing accurate Baroque pieces including period instruments, costuming and sets. Opera Atelier creates original choreography, performed in the style of the time. The music for Opera Atelier’s shows is often performed by Toronto's baroque orchestra, Tafelmusik. Costumes are handcrafted under the direction of Dora Rust-D'Eye.

The company stages two operas per year, giving around twelve to fourteen performances of each. They also tour internationally. Performances by the Opera have been given in New York, Houston, Stuttgart, Bremen, London, Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo. Opera Atelier has also performed in the newly restored theatre at Palace of Versailles in France.

Opera Atelier has received four Lieutenant Governor's Awards.
