[edit] Opennap Servers
Opennap servers are basically like chatrooms. A host hosts an opennap server by using a client (see below). The user then tells his hostname to everyone, eg. via websites, etc. Then people connect to the server and thus forming a user group. The host maintains a list of the files of the users. Whenever a user sends out a search, the query is sent to the host who replies with the hits. The user then selects the files he wants to download. You cannot directly connect to opennap servers. You need a client like winmx [1], or some other client via which the connection can be made. Opennap servers are great places for rare files. Primarily as the people who join them have common interests and thus, their files are more likely to be similar as well. In some clients as winmx, it is possible to host chatrooms in the server as well. So that you can more easily communicate.
[edit] Hosting Opennap servers
Opennap servers have limited capacities. Hence, most servers have limits on the number of users who connect to them. Sometimes it is about 300, 500 or even 1000. It is possible to host opennap servers yourself with certain clients. The primary requirements for hosting are:
- Plenty of bandwidth
- A computer with at least 2GHz processing power
If you fulfill these demands, then it is possible to host servers. Typical bandwidths which servers use are about 15k upload and 7k download. But it depends on the number of users as well as the number of files they share. Popular tools for hosting opennap servers can be found at http://opennap.sourceforge.net/
The OpenNap project is hosted at SourceForge (Note: This site has not been updated since November 15, 2001.).
There is a newer and up-to-date version called opennap-ng; SlavaNap is an alternative OpenNap server .
