OPC Unified Architecture

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On july 2006 the first official version of the OPC UA specification was released.

OPC UA has been developed due to the following reasons:

  • the DCOM technology is leaving space for the new .NET technology,
  • the segmentation of the specification in the past brought too many problems,
  • web technologies are getting more and more used in process control.

The new specification will be backwards compatible with all of the segments of the old specification (DA, AE, HDA, XML-DA) even if the data architecture will be different.

The OPC UA specification will be released in 13 parts. Until today (september 2006) five parts have been released, but only the first one is available to non-members of the OPC Foundation.
