One Love is an album released by R&B quintet New Edition on the Bad Boy label in 2004. It was the group's first album as a quintet since 1988's Heart Break, and the first album since Brown's second departure from the group following their tour seven years before. It was also the first album the group recorded without their longtime label MCA.

[edit] History

By 2002, New Edition were performing as the quintet of Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins and Johnny Gill but they hadn't recorded a new album in more than the five years after their reunited project, Home Again. After fighting their way out of their contract with MCA in which they eventually won back all their masters from the albums they recorded for that label, the re-energized group took an opportunity when Sean "Puffy" Combs, who was now going by the name, Diddy, opted to sign the act to his Bad Boy label replacing since departed group 112 from the lineup. Hoping to renew their image for the new millennium, the group signed in 2002 and were promptly introduced by Combs as the label's new signees. However, it took nearly two years for the album's final product as the group and Combs struggled with control over the record. Finally in the late summer of 2004, New Edition made the news that their new album, titled One Love, was finished.

[edit] Release and reaction

Early buzz and hype over the new album led to One Love debuting at number twelve on the Billboard Top 200 and number five on the Billboard R&B album chart. The group later expressed their disgust when the single, "Hot 2Nite", was released without their consent. Though they didn't like recording the song saying the song didn't cater to their now grown-up audience, they tried promoting the song. Not heavily promoted on pop radio, the song also was not as promoted promptly on urban radio peaking at number thirty five on the R&B chart. It was the album's only release. The group, angered over Combs' neglect, asked to be let go of their contract, which finally culminated in November 2005. Despite the album's failure to garner a new audience for the group, the album would be certified gold. By this point also, estranged band mate Bobby Brown performed at reunited events by certain New Edition members either alongside BBD or soloists Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill. Finally, however, Brown was made an official member of the group again by the group and has since performed alongside the group and he'll participate in an upcoming NE album scheduled for 2008 in time for the group's twenty-fifth anniversary again bringing the group back to a sextet.
