One Liberty Plaza

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

One Liberty Plaza is a skyscraper in Manhattan, New York, which currently resides at the location of the former Singer Building (in 1968, the tallest building to be demolished). The building is 743 feet (226m) high and 54 floors. It was built in 1973. At 2.2 million square feet, each floor offers almost one acre of office space. Indeed, it is one of the largest office buildings in New York.

Its facade is black, consisting of a sculptural steel frame. The building was originally commissioned by U.S. Steel.

The building is bordered by Broadway, Cortlandt Street, Church Street, and Liberty Plaza.

The building had a large and substantial renovation in 1989 which involved the creation of a new lobby and elevator system.

The building sits next to the former World Trade Center site. Following the events of September 11, 2001, the building was so damaged that engineers feared its collapse.

As of 2006, it is the 188th tallest building in the world.
