The ONE Campaign, a part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty movement (the largst anti-poverty coalition in the world), also known as Make Poverty History, is dedicated to the goal of energizing people in the United States to lobby Congress to increase humanitarian aid by 1% of the federal budget, specifically with the aim of fighting AIDS and extreme poverty in the developing world.

The group has made an effort to be bipartisan and inclusive to all sorts of public, private, and faith-based organizations. ONE was originally founded by a coalition of 11 non-profit humanitarian and advocacy organizations (such as DATA, World Vision, Oxfam America, and Bread for the World) and with the help of a $3 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. ONE now has over 100 partner organizations, and over two million have added their voice to the ONE Declaration.

The name of the campaign comes from both the organization's goal of a 1% increase in the budget and also from its goal to "act as one to end poverty". The group also sells T-shirts and white wristbands, which have the word "ONE" on them, to help promote ONE.

The ONE Campaign claims that a 1% increase in the budget could help:

  • Prevent 10 million children from becoming AIDS orphans
  • Get 104 million children into grade school.
  • Provide water to almost 900 million people around the globe.
  • Save almost 6.5 million children under 5 from dying of diseases that could be prevented with low-cost measures like vaccination or a well for clean water.

[edit] The ONE Declaration

ONE Campaign
WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty.

WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs—education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans—would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget.

WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all.

[edit] The ONE Blog

The ONE Blog is a daily log of the anti-poverty movement. The site is operated by ONE staff, volunteers, members and coalition partners.

The content of each post represents the views of that post's author and does not necessarily reflect the views of the ONE Campaign.

[edit] The ONE Voter Pledge

Leading up to the 2006 elections, the ONE Campaign created a pledge for its members:

"As a member of the ONE campaign, I hereby pledge to:

1. Help create hope and opportunity for the world's poorest people by voting

2. Make the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty a top priority when I vote

3. Educate my friends and family on the fight against global AIDS and extreme poverty"

The ONE voter pledge shows the organization taking an even further step in its attempt to make AIDS and extreme poverty a major political issue. Compared to the ONE Declaration, which commits the signer to a more general belief in and commitment to the ONE issues, the voter pledge is very directly focused on political action.

[edit] Partner Organizations

The movement was founded by a coalition of organizations:

ONE now has over 100 partner organizations.

[edit] Celebrity Promoters

As part of the effort to raise awareness on the issues of extreme poverty and AIDS around the world, especially Africa, ONE has gathered the support of a wide array of celebrities. These active celebrity promoters of ONE span from those on the left and the right, the religious and the nonreligious, and are musicians, actors, pastors, and athletes. The list includes:

The influx of celebrity spokesmen has caused some to question the motives of these "rich and famous." These critics view the celebrities' humanitarianism as just a ploy to receive good PR. Others praise the celebrities for being behind such a great cause. Many, however, do not really care what lies behind the celebrities' good deeds and advocacy for Africa, as long as more Americans are made aware of the continent's dire situation and are compelled to action on behalf the world's poor.

[edit] The ONE Video

A video featuring a multitude of celebrities promoting ONE helped launch the campaign. Here is the text of the ad:

"One by one, they step forward: a nurse, a teacher, a homemaker. And lives are saved. But the problem is enormous. Every three seconds, one person dies; another three seconds, one more. The situation is so desperate in parts of Africa, Asia, even America. That aid groups, just as they did for the tsunami, are uniting as one, acting as one. We can beat extreme poverty, starvation, AIDS. But we need your help. One more person, letter, voice, will mean the difference between life and death for millions of people. Please join us by working together. Americans have an unprecedented opportunity. We can make history. We can start to make poverty history. One by one by one. Please visit one at this address (ONE.org) We're not asking for your money, we're asking for your voice."
