On the Nose was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right. It was played for a car, and offered a potential bonus of $1,000.

[edit] Gameplay

On the Nose was a short-lived skill game (along the lines of Hole in One and Super Ball!!), in which the contestant tried to win a car by performing a sports task.

The game was played in two parts. In the first part, the contestant was shown four possible prices for the car. One of the prices was correct, while the other three were varying amounts away from the right price. Picking the correct price earned the contestant a $1,000 bonus and four attempts at the sporting feat. Choosing the closest incorrect price was worth three tries, the next closest two turns and the farthest away from the actual retail price earned just one chance.

The contestant attempted the sporting task in the second half of the game. Five games were used: football, basketball, baseball, tennis and darts. If the contestant was successful at his/her task on any attempt, the contestant won the car.

[edit] Trivia

  • On the Nose underwent a set change during its brief life. On its first two playings, the price tables were backed by red rectangles; on the third playing, they were backed by triangular patters similar to the ones on the tables themselves.
  • The sound effect for the price reveal is unique to this game and has never been heard since its retirement.
  • It is believed that On the Nose was an attempt to duplicate the popularity of Hole in One.
  • Although On the Nose was quickly retired in the United States, it had a long life on Germany's Der Preis ist heiß and was actually one of host Harry Wijnvoord's favorite pricing games. The game is also played on the version of the show currently airing in the UK.

[edit] Retirement

On the Nose premiered on September 14, 1984. It was retired on November 22, 1985 because the events were too difficult to win.
