Ape Escape: On the Loose, known in Japan as Saru Get You P! (サルゲッチュP!) and Ape Escape P in Europe, is a platform game developed by SIMS and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PSP in 2005. In North America, it was one of the system's launch titles. It is a graphically updated port of the original Ape Escape for the PlayStation, which was released in 1999. The player assumes the role of Spike, who sets out to capture monkeys strewn about in different times. It also features 2-player minigames that can be wirelessly played between 2 PSP systems. It is one of the first titles for the PSP Greatest Hits collection in the U.S.

[edit] Differences between console and PSP versions

One key difference between On the Loose and the original Ape Escape (apart from the new aspect ratio, 16:9) is that this game can only be played with one analog stick. Ape Escape required the player to purchase the Sony DualShock, a controller with 2 analog sticks for Ape Escape's unique gameplay. (In fact, it was the first game to require the use of two analog sticks.) Because the PSP has only one analog stick, the gameplay had to be altered to suit the system, similar to how Super Mario 64 DS, the remake of the Nintendo 64 title Super Mario 64, was changed (as the Nintendo DS does not have any analog sticks).

[edit] Plot

The story begins with Spike going to the Professor's house with his friend Jake. There he sees monkeys led by Specter trying to take his time machine to change time in a way that monkeys instead of humans would rule the world. While attempting to do this he also takes Spike and Jake into the past. Jake is controlled by Specter, but you play as Spike, trying to save the world. You go from era to era in time starting in the Dinosaur Era and ending in Modern Day. Each era has three levels to pass before going to the next era.
