OmenServe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

OmenServe is a powerful, yet user-friendly, file-sharing script for mIRC, used to share photos, videos, music, books, and almost any other form of media available.

In use by over 90% of all IRC List Servers, it is not only the most common, but the most popular list-serving (aka @find) script available. OmenServe is constantly being updated and made more user-friendly by two scripters, both keeping the overall vision of OmenServe true to its history.

[edit] History

The first version of OmenServe (OS), (based on the original SDFind script, with the permission of its' original author, SDSailor), was written by ^Omen^ in 1998. ^Omen^ added various features to SDFind, and released his version as 'OmenServe'. ^Omen^ continued to improve OS until version 1.34, when a new scripter, Tipi, became involved with OS. Tipi created an addon to OS called "OS-Limits", which added functionality by limiting and setting limits on files served.

Tipi become involved with OmenServe, and found mp3oholic, the creator of ListMagic. The OmenScripts team was born: ^Omen^, Tipi, mp3oholic. They created OmenServe v1.40 - that version was still pretty much SDFind, with added features, the first fast list maker, and OS-Limits as a separate script.

Tipi took over OmenScripts and OmenServe development when ^Omen^'s personal life got too busy to allow scripting. Tipi released v1.41 & 1.42 after which time ^empty^ joined the OmenServe team. ^empty^ worked with Tipi to add multi-network support to OS, creating v2.00.

Starting with v2.24, DukeLupus joined Tipi in OmenScripts development, with a specialty in creating .dll's, adding speed, and CPU friendliness to OmenServe. Incorporating OS-Limits into OS, a new optional listmaker (QuickList), a new user interface, skins, and support for multiple lists per channel became versions 2.3 to 2.60.

The OmenServe team is now just Tipi and DukeLupus, (two hard-headed, opinionated, and creative scripters), both adding more and more functionality, speed and features to OmenServe.

OmenServe is the only common listserver script still in the active development. SDFind was mostly abandoned after SDSailor's passing. SpR JukeBox and BWI are no longer updated. Other mIRC filesharing scripts, such as vPowerServe, have largely failed to find users.

Notable versions:

  • 1.00. First version by ^Omen^. Some minor features added to SDFind, such as faster listmaker and servers only mode.
  • 1.32. First version of OmenServe that started to differ notably from SDFind. Still actively used.
  • 1.40. Separate listmaker using FoxPro database and dll's.
  • 2.00. Multi-network support
  • 2.10. Multi-list support
  • 2.26. Heavily lower CPU use thanks to custom dll's.
  • 2.30. Incorporated OS-Limits into OmenServe.
  • 2.51. A new optional listmaker, QuickList.
  • 2.60. New user interface in a dll, support for multiple lists per channel, skins.
  • 2.70. Total rewrite of great many functions and all dll's. Lower memory and CPU use, default list is no longer needed.
