Omega Directive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the universe of Star Trek, the Omega Directive is an order that permits Starfleet Captains to ignore the Prime Directive in destroying the Omega particle at all costs. The directive is only used in Star Trek: Voyager episode "The Omega Directive".

[edit] Origin

The directive stems from the Omega molecule being the most powerful known substance. The Borg designate it as particle 010 and seek it out at all costs because it is, according to Seven of Nine, "infinitely complex yet harmonious; to the Borg it represents perfection."

[edit] Knowledge

The knowledge of the Omega Directive is limited to captains and Federation flag officers (and on a need-to-know basis) for fear of the power of the molecule being used in a negative way. A specialized team is normally used to neutralize the particle. In "The Omega Directive" episode, Captain Janeway has to modify this directive because no specialized team is available. Instead, she included the senior staff.
