Talk:Omar Chkhaidze
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
{{POV check}}
I have added the 'POV check' tag, because this article currently is more like a letter of recommendation for this artist (instead of a serious encyclopedic article). Consider sentences like:
- Educated audience [sic!] feels Divine presence in each paintings by Omar Chkhaidze.
and
- Opening the world of this surprising artist, you can feel pleasure of the life filled with love and harmony, and to have an opportunity to touch to Eternity.
and
- Omar Chkhaidze's Weltanschauung having absorbed a wisdom of the east and the west, originates in centuries-old Georgian culture. His creativity is not limited to frameworks of time and space - it has really space scale. Creativity of the artist of Omar Chkhaidze is a new word in painting. This is the art of the third millennium, art of the future.
I don't know this artist at all, don't even know if he is notable or not. — mark ✎ 18:32, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Commentary to the article of Mark Dingemans about a "POV check" on "Omar Chkhaidze".
Mark is absolutely right in putting a "POV check" on this article. The Russian art critic (Kira Medvedeva?), who has written this article, was definitely biased. But, it has to be considered that art critics very seldom are neutral and critic highly depends on the cultural background of the criticasters. In my experience I found the Russian art critic in general more exuberant than the West European art critic. I guess also the poor English translation attributed to this jubilant article.
I regret this happened, because, in my view, Omar Chkhaidze is undoubtedly a notable artist. I met him for the first time, when I was,in 1995, on a diplomatic mission in Tiblisi. During my stay in Russia as a Dutch diplomat, from 1995 till 1998, I met him regularly in Moscow and ever since then during my regular visits to Moscow. I witnessed his development and the growing appraisal he got from the international community in Moscow.
As collector of contemporary art I collected a number of his works, among which the triptych Universe and Adam and Eve, which are mentioned in the Wikipedia article.
Loving specific works of art is very personal, but the emotional and technical uniqueness of Omar Chkhaidze's work is beyond any doubt.
He deserves to be mentioned in WikipediA.

- Update: It appears the issue still has not been resolved. I believe a big reason for that is that the {{POV check}} tag is here on the talk page rather than on the article itself where it belongs. To help with this, I'm going to move the tag from this talk page back to the article (in the section where the disputed text resides). Thanks -- ShinmaWa(talk) 22:27, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] A Re-write
Hi ShinmaWa and mark
I have to agree on the NPOV nature of this article.
First off I should state that I have a BA(Hons) in Fine art and an MFA from University of Ulster and have been a complete art addict since I was about 11 but I had never heard of Omar Chkhaidze or his work. This is hardly a surprise there are many many artists out there who I have never heard of but on reading this entry I felt that I should have been studying this guy's paintings since Foundation Studies in Art alongside the work of people like Braque or Miro or Andrei Rublev. The work available does not support such grandiose claims as are made for it here in my opinion. So I have made a major ( and I hope mostly acceptable edit to this entry) I give my reasoning below:
- Shortened and tidied up the introduction section.
- Shortened and honed the exhibition list. Even though I can find no evidence of these exhibitions they may well exist on Russian sites. It is up to the original writer to provide us with some of these links.
- Removed the 'studied with best artists and had a serious education', what other type of education is there ?
- Removed 'International Federation of Artists UNESCO' as I could find no links to such an organisation. Other than what appear to be copies of this wikipedia entry.
- Removed 'Union of Artists of Georgia'. Once again a link needs to be supplied. Other copies of this wiki are all I could find yet again.
- Removed 'Gold Brush award 99 - 02' as I could find no reference to this award other than it being referred to as the 'Laureate of the Golden Brush 1999' in another cut and paste of this wiki.
- Absolutely no clues are given to which public and private museum collections that Chkhaidze's work may be held in. I have left this in the text but some links MUST be given ?
- Again, there are no links to 'The Best Artists of Russia in the Millenium Boundary' so I have removed it until someone can find a link to this book.
- Removed all of the "XX Century...world recognition" section. This reads as hyperbole and frankly as self promotion by an artist or his agent. Wikipedia is not for original research so if someone can supply a link to a consensus opinion as regards to the artists importance then a version of this text can of course be replaced.

I removed and re-wrote the entire STYLE Section for the following reasons.
- Removed the Vermeer reference because to compare someone's work to that of Vermeer partly on the basis that they both are interested in the human face is flawed reasoning. Vermeer's work is universally accepted to stand out as an acme of the painters craft. I have yet to see Chkhaidze's elevated to such heights anywhere else but in this article.
- This work is in no sense avant garde nor technically unique. In fact it fits rather well into the modernist milieu of early twentieth century painting.
- I removed the reference to the 'divine presence' as this is pure speculation and I for one feel no such presence when looking at Chkhaidze's work. The best that can be said I think is that these paintings deal with a spiritual, ie Christian, subject matter.
- I have trimmed the rest as it largely does not make any sense and parts that do are completely out of proportion in relation to the importance of this work.
- I have added links to other Georgian and Russian artists at the end.
PAINTING TECHNIQUE
I have trimmed this section also. All the 500 years reference is pointless. Any professional arist who does not use the best quality materials at hand is worthy of comment, not those who doe. It should of course be pointed out that even the work of Vermeer has changed over time this is an unavoidable consequence of time and photons and sometimes just plain lack of care. Whether this artists work will last 10 years never mind 500 is certainly open to question. The work of many artists is simply forgotten or lost over time.
I hope this goes some way towards removing the NPOV notice eeZbub
