Olympia Theatre

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dublin's Olympia Theatre in Dame Street was originally built in 1879 by Dan Lowrey as the Star of Erin Music Hall and renamed Dan Lowrey's Music Hall in 1881. Next it became Dan Lowrey's Palace of Varieties in 1889. The original building was reconstructed in 1892 and demolished and rebuilt in 1897 as the Olympia Theatre. It was closed in 1972 due to structural damage. Restoration work was undertaken and the Olympia re-opened in 1977.

The 19th century Victorian canopy which had been restored during the 1980s was demolished in November 2004 when an articulated truck accidentally reversed into it. There are plans to rebuild the theater's front canopy using photographic records, the estimated cost is over € 120,000.

Work on the demolished canopy has been held up indefinitely by the need to close the busy street for a full day to allow construction work to go ahead.

Listed as one of Dublins oldest buildings it was once a brothel and to this day continues to be a regular haunt for famous dublin personality twink.
